POLICE are targeting Mirfield and Dewsbury in a major two-day crime clampdown.

An operation called Strikeback has seen similar short, sharp campaigns happening in other areas and involves several different organisations coming together to target crime and improve the area.

The most recent one was held in Golcar in October.

The latest operation, which began yesterday and continues today, involves Neighbourhood Policing Teams, crime reduction officers, Kirklees Anti-Social Behaviour Unit, Kirklees Council's CCTV van, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA), the Drug Interventions Programme, Housing Department, Environmental Services, Outreach and Drugsense.

Bus company Arriva is also working with officers targeting problem bus routes within Kirklees.

They will tackle issues such as anti-social behaviour, drugs, cleaning up the environment, providing crime prevention advice, targeting people who have offended and those wanted on warrant.

The two days will also include taking untaxed and unroadworthy vehicles off the roads.

Chief Insp Jon Carter, Neighbourhood Policing Team Commander for Kirklees, said: "As part of the force's Strikeback campaign we will be particularly focusing on burglary and providing practical crime prevention advice to householders.

"Neighbourhood Policing Team officers will also be encouraging people to mark their property with free UV pens with their postcode and house number. This makes it easier for us to identify property and return it to its rightful owner if stolen."
