TWO men were arrested after a runaway bus caused havoc in Huddersfield town centre.

The single-decker careered down High Street and smashed into railings and traffic lights at the junction with Market Street just after midnight.

Luckily no-one was hurt, but the damage will run into tens of thousands of pounds.

Railings crushed beneath the front of the bus pierced the fuel tank, sending diesel spilling all over the road.

Firefighters faced a complex task getting the bus off the railings.

Crew manager Richard Carr said: "We had to use cutting equipment to clear the railings and traffic lights from beneath the bus.

"The railings were badly jammed beneath the bus which had to be lifted 4ft in the air so we could get underneath and cut them away. We then needed a hydraulic ram to shift the railing posts out of their concrete bases which were 2ft deep.

"It was a right job that took well over two hours."

Kirklees Council workmen soaked the diesel up with sand.

Drains were covered to stop the fuel from going down.

The two arrested men, aged 31 and 35, live in Sheepridge.

They were released on police bail pending further inquiries.
