TWO Huddersfield Army reservists joked with Olympic legend Daley Thompson while on duty at London 2012.
Warrant Officer Class Two Mark Ibberson and Sergeant Martin Pearson, both of the 4th Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment, were working as part of the venue security team at the Olympic Park in Stratford when they met the British decathlon gold medallist of the 1980 and 1984 games.
They have been working alongside the volunteers and have been dubbed Olympic Heroes for their roles.
Mark, 43, said: “I applied for Olympic tickets and didn’t get any, so I thought the next best thing would be to volunteer to work at the Games.
“I’ve mainly been on a workforce security entrance, dealing with officials and media and it’s amazing to see the range of people required to make an event of this scale work.
“People feel reassured to see soldiers doing security and we get stopped and thanked as we’re walking around.”
In civilian life, the father-of-two works as a gas engineer for Kirklees Council. He went to Rawthorpe High School and has been in the TA for 24 years.
