TWO brothers from Batley involved in a plot to rob a jeweller have been locked up.

Bilal and Waqar Mahmood plotted to rob the store in Purlwell Lane, Batley, by using an accomplice dressed in a woman’s burka.

But the raid last August failed when shopkeeper Mohammed Younis pressed an alarm button.

Bilal Mahmood, 22, of Benny Parr Close, Soothill, was jailed for three years for conspiracy to rob while his 18-year-old brother Waqar, of the same address, was sent to a young offenders’ institution for two years.

Both admitted the charge when they appeared at Leeds Crown Court.

The court was told that Waqar had been in the shop the day prior to the robbery and then planned to get involved when the burka-clad accomplice walked in.

But Mr Younis fought back and the raid was aborted.

The third man, who was wearing the burka, has never been traced.

Recorder Mark Cran QC told the pair that items recovered by police from the shop showed that they had planned to bind their victim.
