A BRIGHOUSE man has appeared in court on fraud charges.

John Russell, 49, of Clifton - a former chairman of Exeter City Football Club - and former vice-chairman Mike Lewis, 63, of Gorseinon, Swansea, appeared for a preliminary hearing before Judge John Neligan at Exeter Crown Court.

They have been charged with conspiracy to defraud, obtaining financial advantage by deception and carrying on a business intending to defraud creditors.

The offences were alleged to have been committed between April, 2002, and May, 2003.

The court heard that police anti-fraud experts conducted a 20-month investigation into alleged cash irregularities at the football club.

The case was adjourned until May 13.

The defendants' unconditional bail was extended.
