POLICE investigating a hit and run accident which claimed the life of a Huddersfield musician have arrested two men.

But they have today appealed again for anyone who saw the tragedy in Shepley to come forward.

Organist and charity fundraiser Tony Robinson was killed when he was struck by a car on Lane Head Road in Shepley at around 5.30pm on Wednesday.

A red Rover car was later found abandoned in Flockton and has been seized by police for forensic tests.

Police want to speak to anyone who saw it being driven from the Sovereign crossroads down to Shepley or who saw the tragedy.

Det Con Steve Bedford, of Huddersfield CID, said: "The family is very traumatised and upset by what has happened and have asked the public to contact the police if they have any information which will help the investigation."

The men arrested are aged 22 and 20 from Almondbury. They were being questioned today.

Mr Robinson, a father of two, had done two sponsored bike rides from Land's End to John O'Groats to raise money and was hoping to do another in June 2006.

His favourite charities were the Huddersfield Macular Disease Society, the NSPCC and Multiple Sclerosis.

He trained as an army officer at the Sandhurst Royal Military Academy. He joined the Royal Signals and then the Parachute Regiment in an army career spanning 11 years.

He was a talented pianist and organist who played at churches throughout the area including Denby Dale, Upper Cumberworth and Upper Denby.

He also played at the twice-monthly Bright Hour meeting at Shepley Methodist Church and Cherry Tree old people's home in Shepley.

His close friend and neighbour Joan Gough said: "People loved to hear him play. He had a wonderful talent and has even played the organ at Wakefield Cathedral."

His late father, David, was a former army captain who was awarded the MBE.
