TWO shots were fired at a brave man who chased a robber.

The drama began when a gunman walked into the Spar shop on Leeds Road in Birstall at 8.15pm last Thursday.

The shop owner struggled with the raider, who fled.

A passer-by pursued the gunman down Leeds Road, on to South View and then Sunnymount Terrace.

The raider twice fired his gun at the man, but missed.

The gunman escaped in a Vauxhall Corsa, which went off towards Leeds.

He wore a mask covering his face and is between 5ft 6in and 5ft 8in tall.

Det Sgt Dave West, of Dewsbury CID, said: "This was a nasty and violent attack and the member of the public acted bravely in challenging the man.

"However, we would warn other people not to put themselves in a situation where they could face danger.

Always ring the police first."

Anyone with information should phone Dewsbury CID on 01924 431059.
