TWO young women were seriously injured in an horrific head-on car smash near Castle Hill yesterday evening.

One of the female drivers was unconscious and had a broken leg as firefighters rushed to cut through her car to free her.

The other driver – who was also trapped in her crumpled car – sustained serious facial injuries in the incident at Ashes Lane, Almondbury at 4.25pm.

The women are both thought to be in their 20s or early 30s.

They were cut out of their cars – a white Ford Fiesta and a blue Volkswagen – by West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

Even through the dark night sky and the heavy sleet, the blue flashing lights of the emergency services high up on the hill above Huddersfield could be seen for miles around as people travelled home in the rush-hour.

Huddersfield Fire Station watch commander Chris Johnson said the poor weather conditions had meant a slight delay in his team getting to the scene.

He told the Examiner: “The traffic was very busy because it was rush-hour and there was a bit of a delay in getting there.

“The weather conditions were awful with sleet and snow, so that was another factor.”

Watch Commander Johnson told how he and his team rushed to free the unconscious woman first as paramedics were most worried about her condition.

He said: “It was a severe head-on collision just below Castle Hill.

“Two women were seriously injured and were trapped in their cars so we had to extricate them.

“One lady who had a broken leg was unconscious and we had to do a rapid extrication to get her out.

“The other one had serious facial injuries. We carried them both out on a stretcher.”

Police shut off the well-known country road as they investigated the scene.

West Yorkshire Police also reported car crashes on the A635 and at Wessenden Head Road on the moors above Holmfirth.

A spokesman said: “At 6.15pm one car came off the road and two other cars hit each-other. There were reports that it was icy up there.”
