Former detective Gary Heseltine set up a website in 2002 to record UFO sightings made by police officers.
His Police Reporting UFO Sightings (PRUFOS) now has more than 500 documented cases involving over 1,000 police officers, dating back to 1901.
One of the most startling occurred near Emley Moor TV mast on November 2 1986 when nine people witnessed what was recorded on an official West Yorkshire Police report as a “possible UFO sighting.”
An officer describes how he received a report of a possible sighting from control at 4.20am. He was asked to “confirm or deny” and he says he “confirms” he “observed the UFO” for approximately three minutes.
He wrote: “I would describe the object as being approx 150-200ft in length, cylindrical in shape with one white light at either end, which were not flashing.
“The object had no particular colour. It was not bright and was making no noise.”
The officer told how the object was two or three miles away towards Emley Moor mast and was “totally static” but “appeared to be hovering.”
See the history of the Emley Moor mast in pictures below.
Gary said: “This was a great sighting. It was seen by six or eight police officers from five different vantage points. They all report this 200ft cylindrical object motionless next to Emley Moor tower.”
