A YORKSHIRE politician is challenging Lord Prescott for a top post.

Euro-MP Godfrey Bloom has announced he will run for the role of Humberside police commissioner later this year.

The United Kingdom Independence Party man will stand in the November 15 vote.

Former Deputy Prime Minister Lord Prescott has already announced he will run for the newly created position.

Mr Bloom said: “It is my belief that the British police are still the best in the world but constant political interference has unfortunately diminished their status in the community.

“Their job has become dominated by paperwork and political correctness and not feeling the collars of Humberside’s criminals.

“I have loads of friends in the junior ranks who would like to get back to a bit of old-style policing and be sure of public support for doing so.

“Lord Prescott has a habit of punching those who get in his way but my message to him is that I am up for the fight.

“Anyone who soldiered with me knows I back my team to the hilt. I want to give Humberside Police the support they deserve and the local community the police force they deserve.”
