A Berry Brow man has appeared in court after allegedly attacking a car passenger and threatening to kill him.

Umar Zaman, of Bishop’s Court, was before Kirklees Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The alleged attack happened in Church Street, Paddock, on Saturday as victim Isra Latif was travelling in a car.

Zaman allegedly flagged down the vehicle, walked over to the passenger side and punched Mr Latif causing him to suffer a suspected broken nose.

The 28-year-old is then alleged to have produced a flat-bladed screwdriver and lunged towards Mr Latif in an attempt to stab him.

He allegedly made threats to kill the victim and his family.

Zaman denies charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, possession of an offensive weapon in public and using it to make unlawful threats and making threats to kill.

District Judge Andrew Pascoe committed his case to Leeds Crown Court where he will first appear on June 6.

He was remanded in custody.
