FORMER Huddersfield Town and England star Trevor Cherry has been honoured by his home town university.

Cherry was one of those to receive an honorary degree from Huddersfield University.

He was on stage at the Town Hall yesterday to receive an honorary doctorate of civil law from the university's chancellor, film star Patrick Stewart.

Cherry - who also had a successful career with Leeds United - has been a successful businessman since retiring from the game.

He said: "I am very happy and honoured. It is a privilege to receive this degree. I'm Huddersfield born and bred, so it is extra-special that the award comes from this university.

"It is my first degree. I think university is important. Obviously, I took a different route, but that was a long time ago and I think now you should get the best education you can.

"It will stand you in good stead for the rest of your life.

"My mum would be proud of what I received today."

He also had a note of optimism about England's chances in the World Cup Finals in Germany next Spring.

He said: "I'm always optimistic, so I think we have got a chance.

"We will at least get to the semi- finals."

A university spokesman said: "Trevor Cherry enjoyed a distinguished national and international career without moving far from his home town.

"He has always been loyal to Huddersfield and the Yorkshire region in general."
