THE University of Huddersfield has teamed up with a city’s museums department in a signed partnership that will deliver exciting new research and exhibitions.

The agreement – known as a Memorandum of Understanding – is between the university and Leeds Museums and Galleries, which runs nine sites, including city centre museums and historic houses such as Temple Newsam.

Following the signing of the Memorandum, the university and the museums service will work together on research and funding bids as well as teaching and learning.

The agreement is the result of a successful exhibition called Out of the Shadows that was funded by Leeds Museums and Galleries and based on research at the University of Huddersfield by history lecturer Dr Rob Ellis.

With a team of undergraduate and MA students, and in collaboration with the Thackray Medical Museum and West Yorkshire Archives Service, he probed the true story of Victorian lunatic asylums in the region.

The aim of the exhibition was to cast light on some of the darker parts of the asylum and asylum life.

Visitors to the exhibition were intrigued by insights into the lost world of institutions such as the High Royds Mental Hospital in Leeds.
