A university student, who pushed a colleague injuring him while working to finance his degree, has been given a community order.

Leeds Crown Court heard today how Adeel Hussain had a job as a quality assurance operative at the Shaw and Lisle Catering factory in Silver Street, Huddersfield when the incident happened on January 26.

Bashir Ahmed said Hussain’s sister also worked there and she had approached kitchen porter Martin Joyce to fill a bucket at the sink where he was working.

There was some discussion and problem between them and following that Hussain approached Mr Joyce and pushed him for what he had done or said to his sister.

Mr Ahmed said that caused him to fall and led to Mr Joyce’s glasses cutting the bridge of his nose. He also had a graze to his cheek and a one inch cut above his left eyebrow which needed eight stitches.

When questioned about what he had done Hussain admitted he lost his temper when he saw his sister was upset. He told a probation officer he had shouted and sworn at the complainant and had not intended the injury when he pushed him.

Andrew Stranex for Hussain said he was working at the factory to finance his place at Huddersfield University where he was doing an accountancy and finance degree.

He accepted he had lost control when he saw his sister and was sorry for what had happened. His reaction was totally out of character.

Hussain, 26 of Victoria Road, Lockwood, Huddersfield admitted assault causing actual bodily harm to Mr Joyce and received a 12 month community order with 90 hours unpaid work.
