A TIP has had to be closed after a man ‘went on a rampage’ in a digger.

Police said Todmorden Household Waste Recycling Centre had been shut this morning because of the incident.

They posted a picture to followers on Twitter of the yellow digger, which appears to have smoke coming from it, and the damage caused, including decimated wooden and metal fences.

The tip is run by Calderdale Council and is normally open from 8am to 4pm on Saturdays.

Chief Inspector Viv Cutbill of Calderdale Police, said:"Police were called to an address on Halifax Road, Todmorden at 7.44am on Saturday, 19 July to reports of a man setting fire to a cabin and causing damage using a JCB.

"Officers attended and the road was closed for a short time. The incident is now over and a man in his 50s has been arrested on suspicion of arson and criminal damage."

A spokesman for Calderdale Council said: "The Eastwood Recycling Centre at Todmorden will be closed today until further notice due to an incident that is being investigated by Calderdale Council and West Yorkshire Police."
