MAJOR upgrade work at a Elland household waste recycling site has begun.

Up to now people dumping rubbish at the site at Huddersfield Road have had to carry it up steps to chuck it in the skips.

But now the skips will all be sunken, making it far easier for people to get rid of their rubbish.

The site will also feature a one-way system to ease traffic flow.

Rubbish removal lorries will be separated from the public area, making the site safer and less congested.

There will be more scope to recycle with skips for high-grade and medium-density fibreboard and plywood.

The site will remain closed while the work goes on. The nearest alternative site is on Atlas Mill Road in Brighouse.
