A CHURCH founded after a tragedy is opening its archives today and tomorrow.
Visitors to St John the Evangelist in Upper Denby will be able to view the church records and research their ancestors as part of Heritage Open Days 2009.
St John’s was built after 13 villagers from Upper Denby drowned trying to cross a stretch of water known as Scout Dyke to get to church in Penistone.
An appeal was made to the Archbishop of York for a chapel to be built in Upper Denby.
The church is open 10am-3pm today and 10am-4pm tomorrow.
