WEATHER forecasts specific to the Holme Valley are now available on the internet.

So-called `nowcasts' give a forecast over the next six hours for the rugged rural area.

The site is the brainchild of Jon Sims, a web developer and fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society.

"Even on the meekest of days in Holmfirth, there could be ice, snow, gales or other appalling conditions on the summit of Black Hill," said Jon, who wanted to create a highly specific site rather than just repeating the generic forecast for Leeds or Manchester.

"I think people should have a much more local and detailed weather service in areas such as this, particularly as the climate is less stable than it used to be."

An altitude of about 1,000ft separates the highest from the lowest communities.

All the information, some of which comes from Jon's Upperthong weather station, is updated every 10 minutes.
