VANDALS have wrecked new facilities at a school - just hours after they were completed.

They scrawled obscenities in wet cement where the posts of a new canopy had been fitted and kicked in the wooden panels of a new bike shed.

Now, teachers at Almondbury C of E Infant and Nursery School have appealed for people living nearby to keep an eye out and tell the police if they see similar incidents.

Head teacher Jane Sargent said: "The work was only finished at 6pm on Monday.

"The canopy was put up to shelter children from the sun or rain when they play out.

"We arrived at school yesterday to find the wet cement had bottle imprints in it and obscenities scrawled in it - as well as names, which we have passed on to the police.

"The shed which was used to store the children's bikes had the panels kicked in on two sides, which had to be repaired."

Ms Sargent said the school at Longcroft had not previously suffered from `significant' vandalism.

She added: "We don't mind children playing on their bikes in the school grounds as long as nothing is damaged.

"But this level of vandalism to new facilities is extremely disappointing - and hurtful to the pupils.

"They see the mess that has been left and wonder why anyone would want to do this to them."
