VANDALS caused a fuel spillage today after they smashed road signs and scattered them across the road.

A wagon from Holland was travelling along Halifax Road, Edgerton, at 4.30am when it hit the signs, which the yobs had used to block the road.

The lorry's fuel tank was punctured and more than 30 litres of diesel spilled out.

Leading Firefighter Richard Carr, who went to the scene, praised the driver's quick thinking.

He said: "He plugged the hole with a pair of gloves and stopped the spill being much bigger."

Environment Agency officials were called in to investigate any fuel which may have got into the drainage system.
