VANDALS have caused hundreds of pounds of damage to a now derelict school.

Stile Common Infant School at Newsome was targeted over the Easter weekend by three vandals.

Three hooded males smashed windows and one was seen attempting to break into the school’s main door.

Children left the infant and junior schools last November and moved into the new £7.4m Hillside Primary School.

The junior school has already been demolished but the infant school building remains boarded up – leaving it a target for vandals.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police: “We are monitoring the situation, the Neighbourhood Policing Team in the area are aware and anyone caught who is involved in criminal damage will be dealt with robustly.”

The incident happened at 6pm on Easter Sunday at the Plane Street school building.

Residents heard the sound of smashing glass coming from the school and saw people at the rear of the building.

One person with a green cap and wearing a hoodie was spotted in the playground area.

The main gates were locked and one person, wearing a blue anorak with a cap underneath, is reported to have been trying to break in through the door.

Police officers in a patrol car were almost immediately at the scene.

The police spokesman added: “Officers attended and went in search of the three lads seen running along the road from the school.

“We have contacted the council to inform them the premises will need boarding up.

“It’s something we will continue to monitor and anyone with information or who knows who is responsible is asked to contact police.”

No arrests have yet been made.

The new Hillside Primary School was built on land adjoining Stile Common Junior School, off Headfield Road.

In December the junior school was demolished to make way for play facilities for the children.

Kirklees Council has yet to decide on the future of the former infants school, a large Victorian building.

No-one from Kirklees Council was available for comment yesterday.
