A HEAVY police presence in Huddersfield overnight prevented major disorder.

But fires were started in Huddersfield and Dalton by arsonists.

A van was torched at the premises of John Shaw's commercial vehicle hire on Leeds Road.

Watch commander Stephen Bates of Elland fire station said there was a heavy police presence in the area.

He said a van was set alight around 11.30pm which spread to another vehicle.

Crews from Elland and Mirfield had to break into the offices to ensure the fire had not spread indoors.

They spent a couple of hours at the scene.

Earlier crews from Huddersfield attended a fire at the Home Start premies in Cow Heys , Dalton where offices were damaged by fire.
