POLICE are carrying out spot checks on cars, vans and lorries.

It is part of a major vehicle operation in Huddersfield this week.

Officers from West Yorkshire Police’s traffic unit and the Automatic Number Plate Recognition team were yesterday questioning motorists in the Bradford Road area. On Monday drivers in the Halifax Road area were being stopped.

Many vehicles were issued with fixed penalty notices.

A number of motorists have also been charged with other offences including driving without insurance.

Some vehicles have been seized by police.

Tests have also been carried out on the fuel in some vehicles, as officials carry out checks of illegal “red diesel”.
