A VET'S appeal against being struck off was rejected after he failed to turn up at a crucial meeting.

Alan Roderick Tait, whose practices are in Holmfirth and Oldham, lied about carrying out surgery to remove bladder stones from a dog.

He had been struck off in his absence but successfully appealed after claiming he had not received sufficient notice of the hearing.

Following a re-hearing in November last year, he was struck off but again lodged an appeal, although this was kicked out in July this year when he failed to lodge his grounds of appeal.

He then applied to restore the appeal but failed to turn up at a Privy Council hearing yesterday.

Dismissing the application, Lord Steyne said: "We have received a letter indicating he knows about today's hearing."

Tait, of Huddersfield Road, Thongsbridge, was found guilty of disgraceful conduct by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons' professional conduct committee at the end of a four-day hearing in July 2002.

The panel heard details of allegations concerning the vet's treatment of two dogs.

The committee was told that he stated he had carried out surgery on an English bull terrier bitch when he had not done so.

He showed the owner X-rays of a different dog and even produced a packet of bladder stones.
