THREE people were thrown from their car and taken to hospital after a horror smash that has closed Vicarage Road, Longwood.

At 4am this morning, the blue MG sports car veered off road before rolling down an embankment.

Emergency services hurried to the scene where they found two people trapped underneath the car.

A 23-year-old Huddersfield man and a 40-year-old woman from Slaithwaite are being treated for 'serious head injuries.'

The road remained closed this morning while police investigate the crash.

Watch Commander Darren Bagley, of Huddersfield Fire Service said: " The two-seater car carrying three people went through a wall and down an embankment and eventually landed on its side.

"One person managed to make it back to the road after being thrown from the car and raised the alarm.

"Both of the other people were unconscious and the car was on top of them.

"We had to roll the car over manually."

A West Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "Officers were called to Vicarage Road, where on arrival, they found an MG sports car in a field.

"The ambulance and fire service were requested to attended as was the police force helicopter.

"A 23-year-old man from Huddersfield was initially taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary but later transferred to Leeds General Infirmary for treatment of a serious head injury.

"Two women from Slaithwaite, one aged 40, is having treatment for serious head injuries while the other woman suffered minor injuries."

The crash is being investigated and the road was expected to reopen later this morning.
