A MAN was in hospital last night – after an alleged axe attack in Huddersfield.

The man in his 30s was said to be seriously injured after the attack in broad daylight at Longroyd Bridge.

Reports suggested he had been attacked with an axe but police would not confirm any details.

Last night, a major police hunt was under way for his attacker.

Police were called to a hand car wash business at Longroyd Lane, Longroyd Bridge, yesterday morning after a man was seriously attacked.

The victim was taken by Yorkshire Ambulance Service paramedics to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary with serious head injuries.

Officers sealed off the surrounding area following the incident and a police presence was maintained at the scene until the early evening.

Several houses in Longroyd Place – at the foot of the sprawling railway viaduct – were also inside the police cordon, marked out with blue and white police tape.

One worker at a nearby business premises, who did not want to be named, said: “It was around 11am and we heard an Asian man had been attacked with an axe.

“We believe he owns the car wash.

“They have been there about a year, he is a good guy.

“We didn’t see what happened but the police were there within minutes.

“There were two police vans, an ambulance car and an ambulance.”

Police investigating the incident have taken CCTV footage from nearby premises including the CJ Stern Filling Station in Paddock.

Detectives were studying the footage last night.

Mohammed Ali, owner of Longroyd Bridge business T&K Motors, told the Examiner: “We didn’t hear anything until the police turned up.

“It’s very unusual and from what we have heard it sounds like a nasty attack.”

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Police responded to reports of a man being seriously assaulted at 11.10am at Longroyd Bridge.

“He was taken to hospital with serious head injuries. Enquires are ongoing.”

A Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We received a call at 11.06am to Longroyd Lane.

“We sent a rapid response car and an ambulance.

“We assisted one male casualty who was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.”

Police have appealed to anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
