This is the terrifying moment a youth brandishes a huge knife near a Huddersfield high school.

Witnesses reported seeing older teenagers armed with machetes near the entrance to Salendine Nook High School at around 4pm yesterday (Tuesday).

In the video, a young man with his face covered and holding what appears to be machete can be seen confronting another young man on New Hey Road, one of Huddersfield’s busiest roads.

A woman who saw what happened said two people were armed with machetes and a third had a large bladed knife.

She said that it appeared that one attacker had managed to land blows on another as dozens of high school and Huddersfield New College students looked on.

The witness added: “The initial incident happened outside the main entrance to the school and college grounds on New Hey Road.

“The fight itself happened around 4pm at the entrance to the school grounds. They then ran down New Hey Road and back in to the school grounds, down one of the alleys and towards Longwood Edge.”

She believes two were armed with machetes and one had a large knife.

“It certainly looked like some blows (from weapons) landed. It wasn’t just a case of them just being waved around.

“The lad in the video is holding a machete. He was taking swipes at the guy opposing him and it did look like he made contact.”

The woman, who asked not to be named, said she was very shocked by what she had seen.

“The last thing we expected to see was a group of young lads attacking each other with knives and machetes outside a high school and college,” she said. “I can’t believe what I witnessed.

“This would be something you’d expect to see in gangland turf wars, not in a rural town in front of a high school.

“It makes you worry for the future and safety of our children and what kind of world they are being brought up in.

“It makes you wonder what will be next? Shootings in schools? Either way, I will certainly be a lot more aware and cautious of what is going on around our children and our locality.”

A parent who has a child at Salendine Nook High School said she had been frightened to be told about the incident by a friend.

"I'm worried and anxious about letting my child go to school."

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “We were called to reports of a youth in possession of a knife at New Hey Road, Huddersfield, at around 4.05pm Tuesday.”

Police officers attended the scene to establish the full circumstances of the incident.

The police spokesman said there were no reports of any injuries.

“Anyone who has any information should contact police on 101 quoting log number 0999 of January 31.”
