VIEWS on gun control are being sought from local people.

Colne Valley MP Kali Mountford wants people to have their say, following the Government's launch of consultation on firearm curbs this week.

She said: "Gun ownership is more prevalent in rural areas. There are shooting clubs in my constituency.

"So I know there will be gun owners with strong views about this.

"There are many people who would prefer it if there were no guns at all," the MP added.

"But as long as we have guns we need to make sure they are properly controlled."

Ms Mountford said she wanted people with an important contribution to make to the consultation to let her know their thoughts, so she could pass them on to Home Secretary David Blunkett.

Comments need to be made before August 31.

Subjects in which the Government particularly wants views include:

* Classification of individual types of gun

* Should other types of guns be prohibited?

* Flexibility of the law

* Firearm categories

* The certification process

* Regulating component parts for shotguns and prohibited weapons that are not firearms

* Responsibilities for issuing certificates.
