VILLAGERS are fighting plans for a skateboard and bike park in Honley.

They say the proposed site in Meltham Road is a recognised troublespot, blighted by gangs who leave a trail of graffiti and rubbish.

An ill-tempered meeting in Brockholes Village Hall this month saw local people expressing fears about the choice of the site.

It is one of several being considered in the proposals, which are in their very early stages.

One villager - who asked not to be named - said a petition was being prepared for local people to sign.

She said the site was ill-advised because it was near a residential area which had a mixture of young families and elderly people.

They did not want to be disturbed by the noise which the park could create.

There were also highways concerns, because the park accesses on to a road which was notorious for speeding.

And the woman added that money could be better spent on creating a playground for younger children.

There would also be a loss of public open space used regularly for ball games and walking, she said.

The woman has written to Kirklees planning and highways departments, the police and her local councillors about her worries.

"I think the council and planning officers need to weight these issues very carefully.

"They should be aware at this early stage of the strong feeling among local residents against the proposed development for the reasons given," she added.
