PEOPLE in Holmfirth have been urged to improve their car and home security.

A sneak-in thief crept into a house in the Cinderhills area after finding the front door unlocked on Tuesday night.

The intruder stole coats, a handbag and electrical equipment while the victims slept.

The area has also suffered a spate of car crimes, with five cars broken into on one night alone.

Acting Sgt Jim Carter, of Huddersfield police, said: "We just want to remind people to take simple crime prevention precautions.

"People should lock their house doors and windows at all times.

"They should also use security devices to protect their cars if they have them - or simply put the vehicle in the garage at night.

"If you have a separate steering wheel lock, use it, or park under street lamps or near security lights."
