ROADS in Honley will be closed while repairs and traffic calming work take place this month.

It comes after action was taken to solve the problem of sharp kerbstones damaging tyres in the centre of the village.

Resurfacing will take place in the village centre on Sundays to minimise disruption.

It will include the construction of new speed humps and zebra crossings.

There will also be resurfacing work on Moor Bottom between Monday and Friday next week.

A Kirklees Council spokeswoman said: “To ensure the safety of everyone in the vicinity the roads will need to be closed for the resurfacing to take place.

“There will be access for residents and employees up to the working areas, but through traffic will be diverted and more time should be allowed for these journeys.

“Residents and business owners using the roads during the closure may be asked to wait for short periods to allow work to take place.

“Residents and their visitors are asked to keep their cars parked away from the road to keep it clear for resurfacing.”

The work comes after complaints from motorists and businesses in the village over newly installed kerbstones.

As reported in the Examiner, several people complained to Kirklees Council in July after sharp kerbstones were laid on Westgate in April.

The new £500,000 stones had been blamed for damaging several vehicles.

A traders’ association formed by businesses in Honley was worried about the effect the problem is having on trade.

And there were claims the road was becoming blocked by motorists parking further from the kerb to preserve their tyres.

Kirklees has since taken action to smooth the edges.
