AFTER four years of fundraising, a children's play area has been completed in Marsden.

A group of residents set about raising money to buy new equipment after Kirklees Council closed the play area in Mount Road in 2000, saying it was unsafe.

Brian Boothroyd, secretary of Marsden Action Group for Children's Play Areas, said it was good news for the village's children.

"With the help of the people and businesses of Marsden we raised almost £4,000 after attempts to receive grants failed," he added.

Mr Boothroyd said they worked with Kirklees over the design and also asked the children what they wanted.

The play area includes swings, climbing frames and grass area for children from two to 14.
