RESIDENTS in Hade Edge are launching a fight against new plans to fill in a former quarry.

Many were shocked to receive hand-delivered letters on Monday detailing the application.

Hallway Architectural Services, of New Mill, has applied for planning permission to restore the former Hade Edge quarry, at Dunford Road, Holmfirth, to its original contours.

Residents' spokesman Peter Wilkinson said villagers were in the process of forming a residents' action group and preparing a petition against the plans.

"Everyone in the village is right behind us. This work would be right behind our homes and would have a massive impact on the environment," he said.

Mr Wilkinson, a chartered building surveyor who lives with his family at the Green Abbey development, said there were health and safety implications of lorries travelling through the village and the area was on the edge of Peak District National Park.

Agent David Hall, of Hallway Architectural Services which is acting on behalf of the landowners, said the site would be filled with soil and subsoil.

He said the Environment Agency had been consulted on the proposals.

Mr Hall said access to the site had been changed from the original application and would now be in the centre of the field rather than behind homes.

He said the only lorries travelling to the site would be along the main road rather than near people's properties.
