A FLOCKTON man is calling for more safety measures on the busy road through the village.

Stephen Eastlake claims Kirklees Council promised a year ago to introduce traffic calming measures on the A637 Barnsley Road, which links to the M1.

However, he says nothing has been done and cars are still speeding.

Mr Eastlake lives with his wife Beryl at the Manor House Caravan Site, off Barnsley Road near the George and Dragon pub.

He said in the 19 years he had lived there, the number of fatal or serious accidents on Barnsley Road had risen to double figures.

He said: "The speed limit through Flockton is 30mph and it goes up to 40mph when you get further out near Grange Moor.

"But the speed traffic comes down the road out of the village is horrendous.

"It is not going to be long before something happens to a pedestrian, a child or a youngster on their pushbike, because a lot of them use the road.

"Highways told me 12 months ago that traffic calming measures would be brought in within six months, but nothing's happened."

Mr Eastlake claimed a pelican crossing with traffic lights would be more effective at slowing cars down than the current zebra crossing near the George and Dragon.

He also wants more warning signs to remind drivers of the speed limit on the road between Flockton and Grange Moor and the council to enforce the 7.5 tonne weight limit on the A637.

He said: "Lorries over that weight are not supposed to use it, but they have been doing.

"If there is one coming in both directions, one has to mount the pavement which is dangerous."

A spokesman for Kirklees Council highways department said investigations are ongoing into how to solve the problems.

He said: "We are currently considering a number of concerns from residents in the Flockton area and are investigating possible solutions.

"We have made a great deal of progress in Flockton with a number of schemes, including the traffic signals on the Flockton `shuttle', and we hope that our investigations will lead to further success in this area."
