TWO teenagers have admitted being involved in an arson attack last October which caused an estimated £20,000 damage to a bowling club.

Bradford Crown Court heard yesterday that petrol was sprayed on the floor of Linthwaite Bowling Club and then set alight, following a series of break-ins over two days.

Jonathan Downs, 16, of Edge Hill, Linthwaite, and Matthew Broomfield, 19, of Stones Lane, Linthwaite, will be sentenced next month. They had admitted offences of arson and burglary.

Both at first said they had simply been acting as a lookout while the other lit the fire.

But after legal arguments Recorder Mark Cran said he would be rejecting their limited pleas.

He told the defendants' barristers that he intended to sentence them on the basis that they had both played an active part in setting fire to the club.

Recorder Cran agreed to adjourn sentence until June 20.

He ordered the preparation of psychiatric and pre-sentence reports on both of the defendants.

Broomfield was remanded in custody until that date and Downs was granted bail until the sentence hearing.

The club, which shares the cricket and bowling complex in Linthwaite, was badly damaged.
