VILLAGERS have been urged to be on the lookout for vandals who defaced a war memorial.

Hepworth War Memorial in the centre of the village was scrawled with writing and logos only hours after judges from the Calor Village of the Year contest had visited it.

The village is among 40 nationwide vying for the title.

The damage was done last Monday evening and follows similar spates of graffiti around the village last year.

Graham Basnett, chairman of Hepworth Community Association, said: “We need to act quickly to prevent further attacks by making villagers aware of the problem and asking them to

be on the lookout for the offenders.”

Mr Basnett said there had been problems in the past in the village with groups of youngsters hanging around and causing damage.

He said that then community police had been called in to talk to residents.

He has reported this latest incident to Kirklees Council.
