A LAW firm with offices in Huddersfield and Brighouse is sending out a warning to people who have not yet made wills or have failed to review them.

Armitage Sykes says wills are a necessity, not a luxury.

The firm says anyone who has assets to leave should not only make a will but also ensure that it is regularly reviewed.

The firm spoke out after the death of Hollywood actor Heath Ledger, who left nothing to his daughter and former fiancée Michelle Williams because he did not update his will when the couple began a relationship and had a child.

Viv Wild, partner specialising in trusts, wills and estate planning at Armitage Sykes, said: “The problems encountered by Heath Ledger’s family are not just applicable to celebrities, but to all of us with something to leave and people who depend on us.

“It’s so important to review your will every three to five years, or earlier should your personal or financial circumstances change.’’

She added: “The cost of having a will professionally written is quite small and could save the family a considerable amount in litigation fees if there is a dispute.

“We cannot stress too strongly that even when budgets and resources become tight it is still essential to consider the position of loved ones and ensure that they are looked after in the future.”
