An army of volunteers has been called into action to breathe new life into a Huddersfield riverside project.

Staff from Fantastic Media turned out in force to help look after a stretch of the River Colne to help support the Greenstreams Project.

The site at Colnebridge includes over a mile of riverside footpath, which was first developed around 10 years ago when there was little public access to the River Colne. Various improvements have been undertaken since that time and these have included the creation of the first formal canoe launch on the river, a major woodland thinning project to improve the site for wildlife and a pedestrian link to the Calder Valley Cycle route.

Jeff Keenlyside from Environmental Alliance, which has initiated many river improvements along the Colne, said: “A major task for the Greenstreams Project is not just to develop these areas of river for public use but to look after them.

“Increasingly, leading companies see that they can play an important role in that process as part of their social and corporate responsibility work. It is very encouraging that many, like Fantastic Media who developed the Greenstreams website, are taking up that challenge.”

The volunteer staff from Birstall-based Fantastic Media got stuck into work that included clearance of litter, opening up overgrown footpaths and repairs to gateways and other structures.

Andrew Hobson, of Fantastic Media said: “Many of us benefit from getting out into the countryside and what better way of doing this than supporting a project that improves the environment and benefits local people and the local economy. That makes good business sense.”

The gateway to the riverside footpath can be found across the road from the Royal & Ancient pub on Dalton Bank Road.
