VOLUNTEERS turned out in force to give a Spring clean to a canal in Huddersfield.

They backed a campaign by British Waterways to tidy up towpaths along the region’s waterways.

The British Waterways’ annual Towpath Tidy takes place between March 1 and March 14, in a bid to clean up our canals.

The Huddersfield effort was along a stretch of the Huddersfield Broad Canal from Aspley to Red Doles.

Willing volunteers cleared rubbish from the water and the path and cleaned lock gates and information boards.

They were joined by Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman.

Laurence Morgan, waterways manager for British Waterways North East, said: ‘The waterways are a national asset and should be a source of local pride.

“The incredible effort local communities and volunteer groups make, especially during our annual Towpath Tidy, gives a real boost to our year round maintenance programme”.
