It's been a tradition in Longwood for more than 140 years.

And organisers behind the Longwood Sing are appealing for new blood to help run the popular annual event.

The concert, which sees bands and choirs perform at an amphitheatre at Nab Tower, returns for its 142nd concert on Sunday, September 13 at 2.15pm.

But organisers are appealing for younger people to join the organising committee.

Clr Christine Iredale, a committee member, said: “We’re short of committee members and many of us are getting on.

“The average age of committee members is 70 and obviously we can’t keep doing it without new people getting involved. We’ve got Charles Ross, our chairman, and Clr Andrew Marchington representing the younger generation but we need more.

“It would involve four meetings a year, the busiest time is the day of the Sing itself of course.”

The six-strong committee organises the bands and choirs for the day and promotes the event.

Clr Iredale added: “It has been going for more than 140 years, we don’t want it to stop but we do need new blood.

“People can join as general committee members and learn the ropes. The Sing is a great tradition for Longwood and we don’t want it to stop.”

The Sing will this year support The Salvation Army and will be attended by the Mayor of Kirklees, Clr Paul Kane.

Every year it attracts crowds of hundreds, making it the biggest event in the village’s calendar.
