STAFF are counting votes today in Huddersfield, Dewsbury and Halifax.

Residents went to the polls in Kirklees and Calderdale yesterday to determine the future of the finely-balanced councils.

Each of the 23 wards of Kirklees has three councillors. One seat in each ward is up for grabs today.

The ruling Labour group is defending seven of its 24 seats while the second-placed Lib Dems are trying to keep eight of their 20 seats.

The 19-strong Conservatives are defending in six wards today, while two of the four Green councillors are trying to win re-election.

Counting gets under way at Huddersfield Sports Centre and Dewsbury Sports Centre at 10am with results expected around lunchtime.

Votes will then be counted for Kirkburton Parish Council, Denby Dale Parish Council and Meltham Town Council.

There were no elections this year for Holme Valley Parish Council or Mirfield Town Council because of a shortage of candidates.

Meanwhile, in Calderdale 17 of the 51 seats are being decided. The council is currently run by a coalition of the 15 Lib Dem and 10 Labour councillors.

The Conservatives are in opposition, despite being the largest group with 19 seats.

Calderdale also has six independents and one British National Party councillor. Counting is in Halifax from 1.30pm, with results likely two hours later.

Staff in both councils will then move on to the Alternative Vote (AV) referendum.

The Kirklees count will start at 4pm at Huddersfield Sports Centre.

In Calderdale counting will begin at the same time in Halifax. Results are expected from both counts by 6pm.
