THE Conservatives are asking for people’s help in selecting a prospective MP.

The party is holding a US-style “open primary” to choose its Parliamentary candidate for Dewsbury.

Non-party members will be able to vote for the party’s candidate for the next general election.

Dewsbury Conservative Association chairman Amelia Bolton explained how the system would work.

She said: “After an exhaustive sifting process and preliminary interviews we will draw up a suitable shortlist which will be presented at the primary.

“We think it’s only right that residents from across the Dewsbury constituency should get to select who they want as their Conservative Parliamentary candidate.

“Our selection process is the most open and accountable of any political party and we are confident the right man or woman will be selected who can represent the entire community.”

The party’s candidate will be chosen at a meeting at the Holiday Inn in Brighouse at 7.30pm on February 24.

Non-party members who live in the constituency – which includes Mirfield, Kirkburton and Denby Dale – can register to take part by calling 01484 717 959 or emailing dewsbury@yorkshireconservatives.org.uk by midday on February 23.
