Abandoned homes look set to be torn down.

A row of terraced houses in Moldgreen have been earmarked for demolition.

Six homes that are currently boarded up, from 172 to 184 Wakefield Road, opposite Carphone Warehouse, will be demolished by Kirklees Council.

Number 170 Wakefield Road and a number of adjoining homes curving round on Smithy Lane behind Lidl will be left standing.

The council already owns five of the homes but number 184 is privately owned and must be acquired before the properties can be demolished.

A demolition plan shows construction teams will re-enforce the end of number 170 after the dilapidated homes are taken down.

Newsome ward councillor, Andrew Cooper, said the council had pledged to remove the eyesore in the hope the land would become more attractive for potential developers.

“The homes are in a very ropey condition,” he said. “Because of that it’s too costly to do them up.

“They are an eyesore as things stand and far too difficult for developers to deal with.

“There may be a development later.”

A Kirklees Council spokesperson, said: “The council has selected to demolish the properties due to concerns about their condition and appearance, especially as they are located in a prominent position on a key route into Huddersfield town centre.

“The council has considered refurbishing the properties as an alternative to demolition.

“However, the properties are in an advanced state of dilapidation and only major repairs will bring them back into use.

“Due to the anticipated high costs of refurbishing the properties and concerns about their suitability for future housing use, demolition is considered to be the best option for the properties.

“There are no plans for the land at this stage. The council will consider options for the development of the site including disposal.”
