A police car has crashed with what appears to be another vehicle in Wakefield Road in Moldgreen.

The A629 was blocked in both directions with traffic queueing following the accident at the junction with Broad Lane earlier this morning.

Eyewitness Duncan Osborne called the Examiner to report the accident and said he had seen the two drivers stuck in both vehicles.

Firefighting teams had got them out by 9.15am and one police officer was wearing a neck brace, he said.

Police 'had lights on'

One woman, who didn’t want to be named, said she saw the aftermath of the accident. She said: “The police car had its lights and sirens on.

“I didn’t see the crash, all I saw was the police arrive at the scene all of a sudden and cars being diverted around.”

Traffic update

The road is still blocked and traffic is queueing. There is congestion on A629 Penistone Road to A642 Wakefield Road and on A629 Wakefield Road to B6432 Firth Street (New Wharf traffic lights).

Police statement

Police have contacted us with a statement - a spokesman said they received an emergency call at 8.30am to reports a police car was in collision with a silver Corsa on Old Wakefield Road.

Two female police officers and a 33-year-old woman in the Corsa all suffered minor injuries. They are currently being assessed at HRI.

The road is closed while vehicle recovery takes place, he added.

It looks as though traffic will be affected for a while.

Policewoman "in shock"

Duncan said he had seen a policewoman looking upset at the side of the road.

He said: “I didn’t see the crash - I saw the aftermath. There were people stuck in the cars.

“There is a policewoman sat on the side of the road in shock.

“One police officer has a neck brace on and is sat in a police van.”

Eyewitness Duncan Osborne said: “It looks as though a police car has smashed into the side of a normal car.

“There are three ambulances here and two fire engines. They were trying to get both drivers out.”
