A POWER cut hit the Aspley area.

Some 29 properties were left without power for several hours after there was a fault in a link box in the pavement outside the Lidl supermarket in Wakefield Road.

A Huddersfield fire crew was called to the scene at 2am yesterday, after reports of acrid smoke underneath a single manhole cover.

Crew commander Scott Belvidge said: “There were flames for a short while and a lot of smoke. The area was cordoned off while we tried to make it safe.”

A Northern Powergrid spokesman said the power was restored around lunchtime.
