YORKSHIRE Water is helping people in the region to shed the pounds piled on at Christmas.

The company has opened up parts of its land to walkers under the Countryside Rights of Way Act.

Yorkshire Water's recreation and access manager Bob Baxter said: "We will be opening more paths and moors for our customers to enjoy."

He said a brisk walk around one of the company's 100-plus reservoirs or a ramble across open moorland can be as effective as an hour on a treadmill in a gym.

He said: "They can take exercise with some of the most spectacular scenery Britain has to offer, rather than working up a sweat staring at a blank wall."
