HUNDREDS of pupils took part in a sponsored walk to boost their school's bid for specialist science status.

Five hundred youngsters from King James's School at Almondbury walked to Castle Hill and back.

And a special treat was waiting for them at the landmark - in the shape of two ice cream vans!

Many of them joined head teacher Robert Lamb in one of Sando's ices.

Teachers expect the effort, a 3½-mile round trip, to raise more than £2,500.

They have already made £35,000 towards their £50,000 target.

"I think everybody enjoyed themselves," said teacher Mr David Bradford, who is spearheading the school's drive to reach specialist status.

The main organiser of the day was assistant headteacher Mr Walter Raleigh.

Youngsters followed a route along Lumb Lane to reach the hilltop before returning down Kaye Lane.
