GUESTS yesterday strolled along a new woodland walk at Pole Moor - which should reach perfection in about another four centuries.

The mile-long circular path at Wholestone Moor runs through more than 20,000 saplings planted this year.

The area covers 28 acres and overlooks the M62.

The saplings include oak, birch, hawthorn and rowan.

"They have been planted on the side of a hill overlooking the motorway and incorporate the circular walk," said Guy Thompson, operations manager of the White Rose Forest Partnership.

Mr Ray Brooke, who owns the land, offered it for the tree-planting.

The £70,000 scheme was organised by Kirklees Council's Countryside Unit on behalf of the partnership.

It received cash from the Countryside Agency, the Biffaward scheme and the Forestry Commission.

Johnson Quarries have planted a large stone to mark a viewing point that overlooks Calderdale and Kirklees.

The Mayor of Kirklees, Clr Barbara Allonby, yesterday tried out the 45-minute walk.

A guide to the route is being published by the Kirklees Countryside Unit.
