A SCHOOL has devised plans to encourage more pupils to walk there.

Whitcliffe Mount Specialist Business and Enterprise School at Cleckheaton is waiting to hear if it will receive a school travel grant of up to £10,000.

The cash would be used to put the plans in place.

The plans aim to:

* Improve pupils' walking to school habits and increase the number walking to school by 5% by September, 2007.

* Encourage safer practice by car users and reduce the number of pupils arriving at school by car by 10% by September next year.

* Improve arrangements for travelling to and from school by bus and increase the number of pupils arriving by bus by 5% by September, 2007.

* Encourage the use of bikes and increase the numbers of pupils arriving at school by bike by 100% by September next year.

A spokeswoman said:

"Most pupils walk or take the bus to school, but we want to encourage even more to travel this way or by bike.

"This will help to cut congestion and make roads safer."
