THIS could be a good year for Walpole.

The Walpole Community Centre team have got off to a cracking start in the Works League season.

And they hope their team spirit will help convince doubters that a lot of good things can come out of an area of Huddersfield which has had a somewhat troubled past.

The club – formerly Crosland Moor – changed their name at the start of the new season and are tied in closely with the people determined to create a new community spirit in the housing estate.

On the field, things are looking good. The side beat Berry Brow 6-2 on Saturday to make it two wins out of three and showed enough style to suggest they could be there or thereabouts come the business end of the season.

Manager Warren Bone has a squad of 24 players at his disposal and there is fierce competition for places.

Many of the players joined last season and have developed into good players. But new signings include talented young players like Jacob Goodare, Desmond Lewis and Lewis Tolson.

Against Brow the side were always in command having grabbed a second-minute lead.

They scored some excellent goals and looked comfortable when put under pressure by the visitors.

Walpole’s goals came from Richard Lewis (2), Paddy Maylett (2), Goodare and McKenzie while Brett McDonagh and Damon Hever were on the scoresheet for Brow.

Walpole spokesman Mario Loucas said: “It was a good win and we have got off to a good start.

“We have brought in two or three new players but the nucleus of the side is the same as last year and the young ones are learning all the time from the older players and the coaching.

“The lads seem to get on very well and they just want to play football. We have high hopes if we can keep this side together.”

Elsewhere in the league last weekend there was a win for Moldgreen Con, 5-0 against reigning champions Syngenta Sports and it put them clear at the top of the table. Tony Morgan grabbed a fine hat-trick for Moldgreen Con and there were also goals for Forshaw and Duffy.

Heywood Sports picked up their first win of the season.

They travelled to meet Hepworth United and won 4-1 thanks to strikes by Franny Warne (2), Johnny Morris and Tattersley.
